The Art Festival
Festival Activities
Community Mural
The community mural is a large sheet of paper attached to the wall at the entrance of the festival. It is a place where every one of our guests can draw and contribute their creativity to the spirit of the event. Our volunteers: Ian, Howra, Wenya, and Michelle all worked to encourage guests to participate by being a friendly face and inviting people to draw with them.
People's Choice voting
People's choice voting allows our guests to participate in the judging of the artwork by voting on the piece that they believe to be best in show. The winner is awarded with a special ribbon and a prize. Accompanying the voting box, we had a guest book where people could sign in and share comments about their favorite art pieces.
Caricatures
A personal favorite of mine, caricatures is a station where guests can have themselves drawn by a student artist. These drawings are quarter sheets of paper and function as personalized souvenirs from the festival. Our volunteer Sabrina drew for the entire event and her hard work was much appreciated.
Refreshments
Providing free refreshments was made possible by our generous donors, including faculty, students, and our local Starbucks. Faculty and students brought snacks, mainly baked goods, and Starbucks provided us with all of the free coffee. Howra, Cole, Nathaniel, and Ethan were all volunteers that welcomed people to the festival and helped them with their choice of snack. Offering refreshments was something that we knew we wanted to do in order to give the gallery somewhat of a cafe feel.
Chalk drawing
Chalk drawing was one activity that Sam wanted to include. Similar to the community mural, it allows guests to experience the art-making process, but in a different medium. Summer, Wenya, and Jesus were our volunteers in this station. They encouraged guests to join them in drawing and directed people between the rooms of the festival.
Sketchbook Gallery
The sketchbook gallery is an additional opportunity outside of the main gallery where guests can see the deeper and less-planned artwork of Santa Su Students. It is a table full of student sketchbooks that guests can flip through under the direction of a volunteer. Our volunteers at this station were Ian and Michelle. They encouraged guests to explore the more personal world of an artist's creative process.
Drawing tables
In order to again encourage guests to explore their creative side, each of the tables in the library for sitting and eating are lined with paper with hand-written messages encouraging guests to draw on the tables. I thought that making even the tables interactive would firmly establish our goal of having people engage in the festival and celebrate art.
