Scholarship

Though this project did not require a formal form of research to acquire the knowledge for completion, scholarship was demonstrated by self-teaching and learning from the mistakes of the curators at last year's festival. I helped set-up last year's festival and am aware of some of their difficulties. Last year, submissions only opened a month before the event, which left very little time for organizing all of the artwork. This year, Sam and I opened submissions nearly three months before the event to give artists plenty of time to create some work. Also from last year, we learned that we needed to be better at communicating to everyone involved when describing when and where the festival is happening because there was miscommunication that lead to having to start set-up very late last year. Scholars are able to learn from their failures, so this year, we made sure to have backup plans for each of the activities that we planned to put on.

Skill

Skill throughout this project shows through in my artistic abilities and experience as well as my effective communication skills. My development as an artist truly progressed at Santa Susana High School, particularly because of the AP Studio Art classes I have taken. Having developed artistic skills allows me to handle the submitted artwork with care and know how to categorize different pieces of artwork. My communication skills developed through participation in volunteer clubs as well as the instances in which teachers encouraged student participation and discussion. Being able to organize my thoughts coherently allowed me to organize donations, promote submissions and event, and speak with all faculty involved in securing all permissions required for the event.

Honor

The largest area in which to display honor for such a project is recognizing the hard work of everyone involved in the making of it. I have better learned in Santa Susana that credit should always be given where credit is due. In order to achieve this, I wrote thirty-two thank you letters for various faculty members, students, and family members that helped me organize any part of the project or who was simply there to help me if I needed it. In curation of the artwork, honor was also demonstrated by properly labeling each of the pieces with the name of the artist, giving a proper acknowledgement to all participating artists. Throughout the project process, honor was also demonstrated by the careful and honest logging of hours. I worked for the exact minutes listed and almost never rounded up my time.

Service

Since the event is free to everyone, it is a service to the community because it gives them the opportunity to see the talent of a program that is often over-looked at Santa Susana High School. This can, in turn, benefit the school because the event can serve as a promotion for the Visual Arts Department towards middle schools. Putting on the Art Festival is also a service towards the students of this department for a similar reason. They are often not able to display their work and show off their talents the way that other arts departments do. The Art Festival provides them with this opportunity.
